Italy comprises the peninsula of Italy, Sicily, Sardinia and several smaller islands. The total area size of Italy is 301,230 sq km (i.e. including the islands), and the population is about 60 million. While the majority of people in Italy speak Italian, there are some minorities speking German, French and Slovene.

The landscape in Italy is mostly rugged and mountainous, with some plains and coastal lowlands. The climate is predominantly Mediterranean and quite diverse: Alpine in the far North of Italy and hot & dry in the South.
